What is Attachment Theory?

Attachment theory, developed by psychologist John Bowlby, explains how early relationships with caregivers shape our expectations and behaviours in adult relationships. Your attachment style—developed in childhood—influences how you relate to romantic partners, friends, and even work colleagues.

There are four main attachment styles: Secure (comfortable with intimacy and independence), Anxious-Preoccupied (fear of abandonment, need for reassurance), Dismissive-Avoidant (uncomfortable with closeness, value independence), and Fearful-Avoidant (desire closeness but fear rejection).

Important: This free attachment style test provides insight into your relationship patterns. Understanding your attachment style can transform how you relate to others. The excellent news is that attachment styles can change—therapy can help you develop more secure attachment patterns at any age.

The Four Attachment Styles

Secure Attachment

Comfortable with intimacy and autonomy. Trust others, communicate needs effectively, and handle conflict well. Formed when caregivers were consistently responsive and attuned.

Anxious-Preoccupied Attachment

Fear of abandonment, need frequent reassurance, worry about relationships. May be clingy or overly dependent. Often formed when caregivers were inconsistently available.

Dismissive-Avoidant Attachment

Uncomfortable with closeness, value independence highly, suppress emotions. May appear distant or emotionally unavailable. Often stems from emotionally unavailable caregivers.

Fearful-Avoidant Attachment

Want closeness but fear rejection and hurt. Mixed signals in relationships, difficulty trusting. Often stems from trauma, abuse, or severely inconsistent caregiving.
