Understanding Grief and Bereavement

Grief is the natural response to loss, most commonly the death of a loved one. While grief is universal, everyone experiences it differently. There's no "right" way to grieve, and no set timeline for healing. Normal grief involves waves of intense emotion, painful yearning, and gradual adjustment to life without the person you've lost.

However, approximately 10-20% of bereaved individuals experience complicated grief (also called prolonged grief disorder), where intense symptoms persist beyond 6-12 months and significantly impair functioning. Complicated grief involves persistent yearning, difficulty accepting the death, intense emotional pain, and inability to engage with life.

Important: This free grief assessment helps identify whether your grief symptoms may benefit from professional support. Grief counselling doesn't mean something is "wrong" with your grief—it provides compassionate support through one of life's most difficult experiences.

Normal Grief vs Complicated Grief

Normal Grief Includes:

Waves of intense sadness and yearning
Difficulty accepting the loss initially
Preoccupation with memories of the deceased
Sleep and appetite changes
Gradual acceptance over time
Ability to find moments of peace or joy
Maintaining some daily functioning
Connecting with supportive others

Complicated Grief May Include:

Persistent intense yearning (beyond 12 months)
Inability to accept the death occurred
Complete avoidance of reminders or excessive focus
Feeling life is meaningless without them
Difficulty engaging in life or relationships
Intense bitterness or anger about the death
Feeling emotionally numb or detached
Suicidal thoughts or wish to join deceased
