Understanding Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect how you think about food, eating, weight, and body shape. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED).
Eating disorders affect approximately 1.25 million people in the UK and can impact anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or background. They have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, making early intervention crucial. However, with proper treatment, full recovery is absolutely possible.
Important: This screening cannot diagnose an eating disorder. If you're concerned, please seek professional help. Contact your GP, our clinic, or the BEAT eating disorders charity helpline: 0808 801 0677 (free, confidential).
Types of Eating Disorders
Anorexia Nervosa
Restriction of food intake, intense fear of gaining weight, and distorted body image. Often involves seeing oneself as overweight despite being underweight.
Bulimia Nervosa
Cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, laxative use, or excessive exercise.
Binge Eating Disorder
Recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food, often rapidly and to the point of discomfort, with feelings of loss of control and shame.
ARFID
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder - limited food intake not motivated by weight concerns, often related to sensory issues or fear of consequences of eating.
Orthorexia
Unhealthy obsession with 'healthy' or 'clean' eating that becomes rigid, restrictive, and impacts quality of life.
OSFED
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder - significant eating disorder symptoms that don't meet full criteria for other diagnoses but are equally serious.
